The Mighty Oregano

McKenzie caught the common cold which eventually developed into a bad case of cough.
She coughs and coughs and would throw up. She has the appetite to eat and drink milk but she would throw up and it is causing her weight loss.

I’ve been giving her Loviscol and her cough hasn’t improved.
After reading posts in Girltalk and Smart Parenting, I decided to stop giving her Loviscol and try the suggestions by Mommies like me:
Oregano Extract
• Nebulize with Natural Saline Solution
Just to be sure, I did a little research as well.
Oregano’s scientific name is Coleus amboinicus and is a famous herb. Manang Josie remembered how they use it in her province to cure cough. It is helps relieve and heal cough and sore throat. According to her, we can blanch the leaves to extract the juice.
I wanted to go to Mahogany Market in Tagaytay to buy the plant but Manang Josie said she saw some Oregano planted in one of the vacant houses here in our Village. She went there and asked for some- Fresh leaves and some with root which she planted in our front yard.

After cleaning the leaves, Manang blanched it in warm water and extracted the juice. Surprisingly, McKenzie loved it! We did not add sugar or anything to alter the taste, but she loved it!

Last night, McKenzie was still coughing but no more throwing up. NSS nebulization also helped a lot.
According to some mommies, phlegm will be expelled together with her stool.
I also learned that expectorants (such as Loviscol ) shouldn’t be given to little kids who don’t know how to spit yet.
Mighty Oregano lived up to its name!
